It is renowned for its unique adularescence, which is a phenomenon where light scatters within the stone, producing a glowing effect reminiscent of the moon's soft light. Moonstone occurs in a range of colours, including colourless, white, grey, peach, pink, green, and blue. The most prized varieties often exhibit a bluish or milky-white colour with a distinct blue sheen.

The most desirable moonstones display a phenomenon called adularescence, characterized by a billowy blue or white glow that moves across the surface of the stone as it is turned under light. This effect is caused by the scattering of light between thin, alternating layers of orthoclase and albite, two types of feldspar minerals within the stone.

Moonstone is found in various locations worldwide, including Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Myanmar, Brazil, and the United States (particularly in states like North Carolina and Florida). Sri Lankan moonstones are among the most highly prized for their superior quality and intense blue sheen.
